Brush pen lettering is very hot right now, and lettering artist Grace Song has provided a clear, colorful, and user-friendly guide with her new book, Brush Pen Lettering: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Lettering Decorative Scripts and Creating Inspired Styles.
I was delighted to receive a review copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
It was a particularly enjoyable book to receive, because my brush lettering skills are quite weak. I started learning calligraphy with the standard nib-and-ink routine, and so picking up a brush pen was a novel experience for me.
I had many of the pens that Grace recommends, as I had purchased a brush pen sampler from JetPens about a year ago. It's a great starter set for anyone who is interested in pursuing this lettering style.
As you can see, I still have a long way to go before I approach a consistent and attractive style with a brush pen:
But Grace Song's book is the perfect companion for a beginner who wants to pick up this no-nonsense and mess-free calligraphy style. She provides step-by-step instructions on each letter form, along with guidelines for use, and the back portion of the book is devoted to a number of ways you can spice up your brush pen lettering, along with DIY projects.
I'll admit that it's probably not a style that I'll pursue professionally, but I loved reading this book and learning from Grace.
I hope to keep studying this practical book and be able to use some brush pen lettering on personal correspondence and other creative projects.
I highly recommended Brush Pen Lettering to anyone who wants to pick up this fun lettering style!
